Isstvan III World Eaters
Angron descended onto the surface of Isstvan with an apparent hate for his own son’s that was inexplicable. In fact, his anger may have been a mask for his own self-loathing, and his regret over the cowardly virus bombs set off by Horus. In the end, the Red Angel chose to end things the way they were always meant to end.
Hi, everyone! It has been a few weeks since my last post. After my initial articles, I didn’t really know what direction I wanted to go next with this. I have so many ideas, but I wasn’t sure that I was ready to move on from Isstvan III. Incidentally, my own work with Book 1 inspired me! My friend Nico mentioned that we should play through the campaign and it made me think, I don’t have an appropriate army. My current Emperor’s Children project is a mid- to late-Heresy army, and while certain units and models would fit the time-period, the bulk of it would not. I dallied a bit with Sons of Horus and World Eaters in 1st Edition, so I opened up the plastic project boxes for each army and decided…
World Eaters!
Khârn the Bloody
So, for the last few weeks, I have been balls deep in World Eaters. It helped that Heresy Hammer put out their video on World Eaters right when I started! This project had sat on the shelf for over four years, with a bunch of stuff half and partially painted. The original project probably stalled because I tried to get clever with my color theory and didn’t like the white scheme. I used a green undertone, which would end up being great for Death Guard, but was terrible for World Eaters. Luckily, my ability to paint white (with a variety of methods) has greatly improved and this was an easy fix!
Here is the first log for my Isstvan III World Eaters project. The force is led by Khârn the Bloody. I originally reposed the model to look a bit more regal. The detail on the model is awesome, but especially the size shows its age. I am actually working on a conversion for a more updated Khârn, and I will use this one as some other kind of Command option.
Despoiler Squad
The first troop unit is a large unit of Despoilers. I have 15 fully painted, with 8 more in various stages of readiness. Chain axes are not a great option in this edition, but if you are fighting Emperor’s Children and giving up the initiative already, who cares?
I have 15 painted up, but only took a photo of 5. You get the picture…
Note: You may notice some extra glow in these photos. They are subtle, but definitely there. These photos are different from the ones I posted on Instagram. I have been playing around in my image editor and tried a few things for the blog!
Graand the Hateful, Contemptor Dreadnought
My Contemptor is named Graand the Hateful. The name is taken from a google search, but the nickname is inspired by my friend Chris, who said he looks like a “hate missile.” The chain fist is obviously a conversion, made when mixing a chain fist and power fist were still a good thing (i.e. not the current edition). I don’t actually love combat-focused Contemptors in the current edition, but the arms are magnetized.
A Rhino called “Spite”
Here we have a classic Rhino! Some people think Rhinos are too good in this edition, but those are the same people that think Tactical Squads are too good. This game is built on big blocks of Tactical Marines, so any edition in which Tac Marines and Rhinos are effective is good to me! 3rd Edition is more balanced overall than 1st or 2nd Editions, but Tactical Squads and Rhinos are standouts, especially in objective scoring missions. More than anything, we need more missions (see my previous blog posts).
I have a bunch of other stuff in the works, as well as planned. I know some people try to keep their projects contained and work on one unit from cradle to grave. My process is more like an assembly line. I always have something in pretty much every phase. Generally, my least favorite phase is building. I used to hate messing with resin. Now, we have so much in plastic, but GW made it into so many pieces that it sometimes has me missing resin. Anyway, sometimes I do get a wild hair up my ass and decide to build a bunch of stuff.
Some WIPs
Regardless, I have a large notebook to keep my projects organized, and I break it down into the following phases or steps: Started, built, primed, airbrush base, decals, oils, final base, and completed. The “final base” step is something I have added in the last year or so, as there can be a huge gap in a project between oils and completion. There are also certain aspects of a base coat that I do not add until after oils. For instance, I have found that oils eat away at my golds, even with a varnish. Also, applying them after oils means they do not get hit with matte varnish.
Well, that is a bit of a peak behind the curtain of my process, if it interests anyone. Otherwise, I will also add some WIP photos as well. I have a Land Raider and a Spartan relatively close to completion. I did the oils along with the Rhino and Contemptor but decided to finish them separately. The Rhino and Contemptor alone were both a few days work after oils. That is on a holiday schedule, where I actually might get less time per day to work, but still. The high after getting those two models completed was totally worth it!
I also have a Tactical Squad and a Champion. People love chain axe-wielding World Eaters, and I get it! I do as well, but people seem to forget that the World Eaters had Tactical Squads like everyone else. Anyway, I have a bunch more in the works, but that’s enough for now!
Thanks to my favorite World Eater player, Duncan, of the Heresy Accountabilibuddies Podcast for the recent shout out!
Conclusion
I have no idea what I will post next, but, in the meantime, check out Chris’ blog Addicted to Resin. The link here will take you to his Sons of Horus recipe. He has a bunch of other stuff, including his Death Guard. I might do an article on one of his Isstvan III appropriate armies or maybe convince him to do an updated article on his blog as a collabo!
In the meantime, you can check me out Instagram or Facebook!
